Kirsten Gair (Stewartry AC) has been a dominant force in the Under 15 Discus in Scotland in 2009 and 2010. She again won a national title although she was pushed all the way. Her winning throw was 25.43m in a tight competition. She won by only 2cm and was only 5cm ahead of 3rd and 4th. In her other event, the Javelin, Kirsten was 7th in 25.78m, a bit down on her personal best but still won of her best throws ever.

She held off a challenge from Shettleston's Stella Winters to prevail in a new personal best time of 2:16.03.
Laura Penrice (Shettleston Harriers) has enjoyed success upon moving up to the 1500m and she continued that with a silver medal in the Under 15 event. Se moved through to the final from her heat easily and was only just edged out in 5:04.05.
Kieran Saunders (Nithsdale AC) is still only a first year Under 15 and was one of the youngest boys in the race. Danielle Beattie (Nithsdale AC) is also first year in her age group. She faced the difficult task of doubling up in the 800m and 1500m. On the Saturday, it was the 1500m, which was a straight final. She finished in 6th place with 4:56.81, her second fastest time ever and only 0.4 seconds away from her PB. The 800m was a bit tougher as she didn't advance from her heat with a time of 2:26.60.

Danielle ran strongly and although she was disappointed with her time of 11:30.10, she received a bronze medal for her efforts.

Scottish Schools Championships
Grangemouth
11th/12th June 2010
Dumfries & Galloway school pupils brought home a remarkable tally of 5 golds and 3 silvers home from the Scottish Schools Championships. Double gold medallists were Stewartry AC duo Kirsty Yates and Kirsten Gair, while Anna Graham of Nithsdale AC took a surprise victory in the Under 14 75m Hurdles. Middle distance stars Joanna Muir, Katy Brown and Laura Penrice took silver.
There was no doubting Kirsty Yates' superiority as the 5th year pupil from Castle Douglas High School took 2 emphatic wins in the Over 17 Shot and 100m Hurdles. Her best performance was in her number 1 event, the Shot Put. She added 4cm to her outdoor PB with a good 12.55m put. This moves her to 8th in the UK Under 20 rankings and 4th in the Under 18 rankings. In the hurdles, she took over a second off her PB with a 16.24 run, giving her victory by just over 2 seconds.
Kirsten Gair also produced two PBs in her events, the 14-15 Discus and Javelin. As Scottish Champion in the event, the Discus victory was expected. Gair threw over 27m for the first time with a PB of 27.30m, giving a 2 metre victory. Her Javelin win was a surprise one but well deserved. She threw a PB of 27.02m to gain victory over pre-event favourite Shannon Eyers (Caithness AAC).
Under 14 Anna Graham was the revelation of the weekend, winning the 75m Hurdles. With a handy wind reading of +1.4m/s, Graham won her heat in a massive new PB of 12.53 (previous best 12.93). The final was a tight affair but Graham once again improved to 12.45 to win by 0.05 seconds. This time puts her into contention for a medal come the Scottish Championships in August.
Comeback kid Katy Brown (Stewartry AC) just lost out on a second national gold medal this year, despite clocking a personal best of 2:16.26 in the 15-17 800m. The Scottish Under 17 Closed Champion lost out in a sprint finish, with Dundee's Iona Brodie taking the win in 2:15.57. Nevertheless, this will be another confidence boost for Brown, who has plagued by injuries in her short career.
Joanna Muir (Stewartry AC) didn't look convincing in her 1500m heat as she finished 3rd behind Olivia O'Hare and Louisa Stewart in 5:07.47. However, she turned it around in the final to finish a clear 2nd behind Stewart (Edinburgh AC). She clocked a season's best of 4:47.45.
Laura Penrice (Stewartry AC) opted to compete in the 14-15 1500m instead of her usual 800m. This paid off as she just lost out to Eilidh Prise of Aberdeen in a fight for the gold medal. The two were clear of 3rd and Penrice dipped under 5 minutes for the 1st time with a PB of 4:58.45. Prise won in 4:57.60.
Fierce rivals Fraser White (Nithsdale AC) and Kieran Saunders (ADAC) ended up in the same heat of the Under 14 800m. Both made it through safely with White 3rd in 2:18.34 and Saunders 4th in 2:18.73. The final was considerably faster, being won in 2:11. White coped better, finishing agonising 4th in a PB of 2:14.79. This was only 0.68 seconds off a medal. Saunders looked tired but finished with a good time of 2:18.70 in 7th.
Saunders returned on Saturday to contest the 1500m. He was impressive in winning his heat in a PB of 4:45.40. The final again was faster and a tired Saunders was 8th in 4:46.20.
Stephanie Lawrie (Nithsdale AC) ran well in her last Scottish Schools Championships. She was 5th in the 1500m with 5:21.28, her fastest time outdoors since 2008. Fellow middle distance runner Chris Ponton (Nithsdale AC) competed in his first ever 3000m. He ran a decent 9:53.14 to finish 10th.
Alison Pringle (ADAC) competed in the Under 14 Shot, Discus and Javelin. She set a PB in the Discus of 14.84m to finish 10th, chucked her 2nd furthest ever Shot of 5.52m to finish 7th and was 9th in the Javelin with 11.42m.
Older sister Jacqueline Pringle (Stewartry AC) jumped her second furthest Long Jump with 4.26m (PB 4.34m) and finished 15th in a large field. She didn't perform as well in her 800m heat with a time outside 2:40.

The day started off well with 14.66 in the 75m Hurdles (PB 14.6), which was 13th fastest. Next up was the High Jump and the benefits of some extra coaching payed off with a 2cm PB of 1.22m. This was 14th in the Pentathlon.
Another PB followed in the Shot. Pringle finished 9th equal with a put of 6.93m. The second last event of the day was the Long Jump. She couldn't quite manage her PB of 4.34m but jumped a decent 4.11m to finish 8th. The last event was the 800m, which is even more difficult after 4 other events. Pringle performed well to finish in 2:37.64, 4th overall.
All these performances added up to 2017 points, which was a good first effort in multi-eventing for Pringle. She will now turn her attention to the Scottish Schools Championships on 11th and 12th of June.

Loughborough
Many of the UK's top athletes travelled to Loughborough to take part in the highly rated domestic competition. Nicola Hood (VP-Glasgow) was competing as a guest in the 3000m Steeplechase and rubbed shoulders with some big names including Jessica Ennis, Craig Pickering and Jodie Williams. It was Williams who stole the show with an impressive 22.79 in the 200m. The searing heat and tailwind made it a good day for sprinters but made life more difficult for the endurance athletes. Indeed, the water jump was highly appreciated for the steeplechasers.
But the heat didn't deter Hood too badly as she finished an impressive 2nd in 10:28.29, her 3rd fastest ever and 18 seconds faster than her time here last year. Going into the final water jump, Hood was lying 3rd. In-form Emma Raven was leading clearly from England's Laura Parker, who had a large gap ahead of Hood. However, it ain't over until the fat lady sings and a strong last 150m saw Hood pipping Parker on the line for 2nd place.

Scottish Champs Weekend
Scottish Under 15/Under 17 Closed Championships
Wishaw
15th May 2010
Stewartry AC duo Katy Brown and Kirsten Gair became Scottish champions in their respective events at the weekend. Brown proved that she is well over the injuries that have plagued her last two seasons, winning the Under 17 800m in a comprehensive manner. She was bronze medallist last year in a PB of 2:19.08. She obliterated that best on Saturday with a brilliant 2:16.78 clocking. If she can stay injury free, that best may come down even more.
Gair defended her Under 15 title from last year in the Discus with a PB throw of 26.73m. This was her first Discus competition of the year. She also collected silver medal in the Javelin, adding another 2 metres onto her previous best only set this year. Her throw was 26.36m. Gair also finished 5th in the Shot with a throw of 8.39m, 10cm off her PB.
The other medals came from the longer distances. Joanna Muir (Stewartry AC) kicked off her track season with a bronze medal in the 1500m with a SB of 4:49.54. Danielle Beattie (Nithsdale AC) was third in her first ever steeplechase race. Still only 14, Beattie ran a great race over 1500m to finish with a great time of 5:26.56. The event was won in a Scottish Under 17 record of 5:10 but with another year in the Under 17 age group, Beattie may challenge that by next year.
Just missing out on the medals was Laura Penrice (Shettleston Harriers). She has been in great form this year with large PBs over 800m and 1500m. On this occasion she competed in the 800m. After a quick heat (2:27.63), the windy conditions took their toll on Laura as she finished 4th in 2:29.26.
In other events, Kieran Saunders (ADAC) demolished his PB in the 1500m to finish 9th in 4:45.92, an impressive time from a first year Under 15. Jacqueline Pringle (Stewartry AC) finished 6th in her 800m heat with 2:35.96 and 11th in the Long Jump with 4.01m. Anna Graham (Nithsdale AC) marginally missed her PB in the 75m Hurdles with a time of 13.51.
Scottish Inter Regional Championships
Wishaw
16th May 2010
5 of the region's senior women competed for various teams in the 2nd Scottish Inter regional Championships.
Jane Scott (VP-Glasgow/Stewartry AC/West City) had a good day with a PB in the Long Jump of 5.69m to finish 2nd and 16.00 in the 100m Hurdles to finish 3rd.
Kirsty Barr (VP-Glasgow/West City) hopped, skipped and leaped her way to a 50cm PB in the Triple Jump of 10.87m. She finished 2nd. She also clocked 13.09 in the 100m and 5.31m in the Long Jump.
Nicola Hood (VP-Glasgow/West City) kicked off her season with 3rd place in the 2000m Steeplechase. She clocked 6:51.99, faster than her winning time from last year, but it wasn't enough this year as Emma Raven (Central) stormed to a new Scottish record. Hood set the early pace but payed for it later as Raven and Sarah Hood (East) came passed her as she tired.
Hope Robertson (Edinburgh AC/East) improved on her SB in the 100m to 12.69 into a headwind. She finished 2nd, just 0.04 seconds off the winner. Her 200m wasn't as good, although still decent. She clocked 26.07 to finish 3rd.
Stephanie Lawrie (Nithsdale AC) ran as a guest in a loaded 800m. She finished in 2:31.40, narrowly off her best of 2:31.27, although she was disappointed not to get nearer to the 2:30 barrier.
