Scottish Age Group Championships
Scotstoun
14th/15th August 2010

6 D&G athletes between the ages of 13 and 16 competed at the Scottish Age Group Championships held at the newly reopened Scotstoun stadium. Between they returned with 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 2 personal best performances.

Kirsten Gair (Stewartry AC) has been a dominant force in the Under 15 Discus in Scotland in 2009 and 2010. She again won a national title although she was pushed all the way. Her winning throw was 25.43m in a tight competition. She won by only 2cm and was only 5cm ahead of 3rd and 4th. In her other event, the Javelin, Kirsten was 7th in 25.78m, a bit down on her personal best but still won of her best throws ever.

The other gold medal of the weekend went to Katy Brown (Stewartry AC). After having a few injury problems in 2008 and 2009, she is finally back on track. She showed her intentions in winning her heat and continued that winning form into the final. She held off a challenge from Shettleston's Stella Winters to prevail in a new personal best time of 2:16.03.

Laura Penrice (Shettleston Harriers) has enjoyed success upon moving up to the 1500m and she continued that with a silver medal in the Under 15 event. Se moved through to the final from her heat easily and was only just edged out in 5:04.05.

Kieran Saunders (Nithsdale AC) is still only a first year Under 15 and was one of the youngest boys in the race. Still, he acquitted himself well in the heat, clocking a PB of 2:15.09 to advance through to the final. In the final, he ran his 2nd fastest time ever of 2:16.28 to finish a great 5th place.

Danielle Beattie (Nithsdale AC) is also first year in her age group. She faced the difficult task of doubling up in the 800m and 1500m. On the Saturday, it was the 1500m, which was a straight final. She finished in 6th place with 4:56.81, her second fastest time ever and only 0.4 seconds away from her PB. The 800m was a bit tougher as she didn't advance from her heat with a time of 2:26.60.

The other athlete was Chris Ponton (Nithsdale AC) who found the going tough in his 800m. He was 6th in his heat with 2:10.77.

Under 13 Angus Johnstone (Nithsdale AC) has had a disrupted season. He was 5th in his 200m heat with a time of 30.07 (-0.1).

Senior athlete Jane Scott (VP-Glasgow) took victory in the Long Jump with 5.25m and was 2nd in the 100m Hurdles with 15.81.

Scottish Senior Championships

17th and 18th July 2010

Strong winds limited times but the 5 of the region's athletes competed very well, with Hope Robertson (Edinburgh AC) collecting a silver medal in the 100m.

Hope's time of 12.98 wasn't the quickest but was good considering the -4.8m/s headwind. Hope also competed in the 200m. She won her heat in 25.83 (-3.9m/s) but could only finish 5th in a tough final. She ran 25.70 into a large -4.om/s wind.

Jane Scott (VP-Glasgow) was close to the medals in the 100m Hurdles. She could only manage a time of 17.23 (-3.0) but came in 4th place. She came 5th in the Long Jump with a wind assisted 5.46m.

Kirsty Yates (Stewartry AC) came 5th in the Shot. At the age of 17, it was a good position but she could only manage a throw of 11.77, 80cm away from her personal best.

Kirsty Barr (VP-Glasgow) was another person in 5th place; this time in the Triple Jump. She jumped 10.52m, which was declared as wind assisted due to a faulty wind gauge.

Nicola Hood (VP-Glasgow) qualified comfortably for the 1500m final and did extremely well to finish just outside her personal best. She ran 4:33.90 in horrendous conditions. Her PB is 4:33.45.

10th/11th July 2010

Jane Scott (VP-Glasgow) and Jacqueline Pringle (Stewartry AC) competed in the windy conditions over 7 and 5 events respectively.

Jane was competing in the Senior Women's Heptathlon. She started off Day One well with a sub-16 clocking in the 100m Hurdles. She finished in 15.75 (+1.6m/s) to finish 2nd. Event Two was the High Jump and Jane finished 1st equal with a leap of 1.49m, 1cm down on her season's best. Unfortunately, the only other competitor dropped out after the High Jump, meaning Jane just had to finish to be crowned Scottish champion. This didn't put her off, however. She swiftly followed that news with a PB in the Shot of 6.90m. and finished the day with a 27.72 200m.

Day Two of the heptathlon arrived and started with Jane's specialist event, the Long Jump. She jumped a good 5.40m before heading into the Javelin, one of weaker events. Despite this, she set a new lifetime best of 17.23m. The final event was the dreaded 800m and the windy conditions made it all that more daunting. Jane finished in 2:50.11, giving her a total of 3708 points. It was well down on her PB of 3850 from the year before, but good considering the extremely windy conditions.

Jacqueline was competing in the Under 15 Girls Pentathlon. She started with a good 4.24m Long Jump but had a disappointing 75m Hurdles with a time of 16.07, well down on her best of 14.6. She then threw a solid 6.59m in the Shot and equalled her PB in the High Jump with 1.22m. Her best position came in the 800m, where she was 2nd in 2:41.40. This added up to 1881, giving her 6th place (PB 2017 points).
