Weekend Update: 14th/15th April 2012

Scottish Universities Track & Field Championships - 14th April 2012, Grangemouth
Last week's 1500m winners at the Lothian Trials, Chris Ponton and Stephanie Lawrie were both disappointed as they failed to finish their respective 1500m races.

Ponton (Edinburgh AC) was competing as a guest, but struggled after a quick first two laps and couldn't finish. The race was won in 4:02.95. Ponton's best from last season is 4:13. Stephanie Lawrie (Edinburgh University) looked a dead cert for a PB and potentially a medal with 800m completed in the women's race but the Nithsdale athlete dropped out at 1km, despite still being in contention for the silver medal.

Lawrie got over her disappointment with a fine run in the 400m. A strong run saw her set a huge personal best of 64.36, down from 68.3 seconds last year. She finished 4th. Lawrie was also part of the Edinburgh Uni 4x400m team that took gold ahead of Dundee, who had British international steeplechaser Eilish McColgan in their team.

Kirsty Barr (VP-Glasgow) also brought in the points for Edinburgh University. She took gold in the Long Jump (5.35m) and High Jump (1.60m CR), as well as anchoring the 4x100m team to a commanding victory.

Ayrshire Harriers Open Graded Meeting - 15th April 2012, Ayr
Angus Johnstone (Nithsdale AC) was the only D&G competitor, finishing 4th in the 1500m in 5:09.8.

Border Harriers Open Graded Meeting - 15th April 2012, Carlisle
There were several good performances as more athletes made their season debuts.

Katy Brown (Stewartry AC) completed her first 800m since June of last year and ran a solid 2:20.9. Liam Woodman (ADAC) continued his good form by winning the 100m, 200m and shot put, adding a metre onto his PB in the latter. Other impressive performances came from Manon Gillon (Stewartry AC) who set a massive 200m PB and Anna Graham (Nithsdale AC) who won the 80m Hurdles by a wide margin.

Scottish Age Group Championships

Scottish Age Group Championships
Scotstoun
14th/15th August 2010

6 D&G athletes between the ages of 13 and 16 competed at the Scottish Age Group Championships held at the newly reopened Scotstoun stadium. Between they returned with 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 2 personal best performances.

Kirsten Gair (Stewartry AC) has been a dominant force in the Under 15 Discus in Scotland in 2009 and 2010. She again won a national title although she was pushed all the way. Her winning throw was 25.43m in a tight competition. She won by only 2cm and was only 5cm ahead of 3rd and 4th. In her other event, the Javelin, Kirsten was 7th in 25.78m, a bit down on her personal best but still won of her best throws ever.

The other gold medal of the weekend went to Katy Brown (Stewartry AC). After having a few injury problems in 2008 and 2009, she is finally back on track. She showed her intentions in winning her heat and continued that winning form into the final. She held off a challenge from Shettleston's Stella Winters to prevail in a new personal best time of 2:16.03.

Laura Penrice (Shettleston Harriers) has enjoyed success upon moving up to the 1500m and she continued that with a silver medal in the Under 15 event. Se moved through to the final from her heat easily and was only just edged out in 5:04.05.

Kieran Saunders (Nithsdale AC) is still only a first year Under 15 and was one of the youngest boys in the race. Still, he acquitted himself well in the heat, clocking a PB of 2:15.09 to advance through to the final. In the final, he ran his 2nd fastest time ever of 2:16.28 to finish a great 5th place.

Danielle Beattie (Nithsdale AC) is also first year in her age group. She faced the difficult task of doubling up in the 800m and 1500m. On the Saturday, it was the 1500m, which was a straight final. She finished in 6th place with 4:56.81, her second fastest time ever and only 0.4 seconds away from her PB. The 800m was a bit tougher as she didn't advance from her heat with a time of 2:26.60.

The other athlete was Chris Ponton (Nithsdale AC) who found the going tough in his 800m. He was 6th in his heat with 2:10.77.

Celtic Games and Linwood Open Meeting

Celtic Games

7th August 2010

Kirsty Yates (VP-Glasgow) was a dominant force in the Under 18 Shot Put. She unleashed a PB of 12.73m to win full points for Scotland against teams from Wales, Ulster and Ireland. The best throw of her career also gave her a massive lead of over 1 and a half metres to win in style.

Linwood DunRen Open Meeting
Linwood
7th August 2010

Laura Penrice (Shettleston Harriers) produced the best D&G result with a PB of 2:22.79 in the 800m. Laura has been focusing more on the 1500m this year but the extra endurance seems to have paid off in her 800m.

Under 13 Angus Johnstone (Nithsdale AC) has had a disrupted season. He was 5th in his 200m heat with a time of 30.07 (-0.1).

Senior athlete Jane Scott (VP-Glasgow) took victory in the Long Jump with 5.25m and was 2nd in the 100m Hurdles with 15.81.
