Annan River Races inc Dumfries & Galloway XC Championships

Annan River Races and Dumfries and Galloway Championships
Annan
7th March 2010

248 competitors lined up for the 2010 edition of the Annan River Races. Conditions were just about perfect for the flat(ish) course around Everholm Park

Under 9 Boys
Law and District's Comack King was too strong for the rest of the field, winning by a clear margin in 3:30. Gretna pupil John Stubbs was the first Dumfries & Galloway resident in 2nd with 3:37. He was 10 seconds clear of Matthew Magnay and Patrick Wedge of Kirkpatrick Fleming PS who both clocked 3:47. Magnay edged out Wedge for 3rd place.

Under 9 Girls
Erin Dobie (Nithsdale AC) took the lead from the off and ran a strong race to come home in 3:39. Lara Davidson of Gretna PS was 3 seconds further behind with 3:42 and Katie Reville (Unattached) made it a Dumfries and Galloway 1, 2, 3, with 3:48.

Under 11 Boys
Robson McKay ran the perfect tactical race to clinch victory. He sprinted away from Scott Wilson (Carlisle Aspatria) to take an overall victory and become the new Dumfries and Galloway Champion. His time was 5:58 to Wilson's 6:00. Local resident Robbie Hogg was well behind in 6:07. Cameron Wadge of Kirkpatrick Fleming PS was 3rd in the Dumfries and galloway Championships with 6:20 in 5th.

Under 11 Girls
Ellie Paisley of Langholm PS was 4th in this race last year but stepped up to prove a convincing winner over Reagan Binnie (Law & District). Paisley clocked 6:30, 40 seconds faster than her time last year. Binnie's time was 6:40, an improvement on her 7:39 last year, where she finished 8th. Gemma Carig (Stewartry AC) was just one second behind Binnie to take a bronze medal overall and 2nd D&G. Kayleigh Proudfoot (Newington PS) was 3rd D&G with 7:03 (5th).

Under 13 Boys
Local boy Kieran Saunders (ADAC) prevailed in a close-fought competition with Fraser White (Nithsdale AC). The two boys were neck and neck coming into the final straight but Saunders had more strength in the sprint to the line. Their times were 9:18 and 9:20. Law's Rory McLaughlin took 3rd with 9:27. Euan Penrice in 4th was 3rd in the D&G Championships with 9:47.

Under 13 Girls
Carlisle Aspatria's Chelsea Nugent was the dominant winner in a swift 9:28. Aylish Paisley (Langholm Academy) was crowned D&G Champion for the second year in a row in 10:01. The remaining podium place went to Pamela McNicol (Law & District) in 10:32. The minor medallists in the D&G Champinships were Kathryn Park (Nithsdale AC) in 11:43 and unattached Sky Arwick in 12:57.

Under 15 Boys
Stuart McLuckie and Ross Hill (Law & District) made it a Law 1, 2, with Hill just edging out Nithsdale AC's Chris Ponton, who successfully defended his Under 15 Dumfries and Galloway crown. McLuckie was a clear winner in 11:17, Ponton and Hill both clocked 11:42. Ponton's teammate Ryan Holmes was second in the D&G Championships with 12:14 and Jamie Paisley (Langholm Academy) was 3rd (12:44).

Under 15 Girls/Under 17 Women
Last year's Under 13 Champion Abbie Hetherington (Carlisle Aspatria) was a confident victor over West District Champion and Scottish Bronze Medallist Danielle Beattie (Nithsdale AC). Hetherington clocked 12:01, Beattie 12:47. They were followed home by reigning Under 17 Champion Stephanie Lawrie (Nithsdale AC) who improved on her winning time by over a minute with 13:42. Lauren Craig (Stewartry AC) finished 3rd Under 15 with 14:07. Rowane Glendinning (ADAC) was the 3rd D&G competitor with 15:00.

Under 17 Men/Senior Men/Women
There were no local competitors in the Under 17 Men category, which left the way clear for Law's Craig Wellcoat to produce a fine win over all competitors, including the Senior Men. His time was an impressive 27:00. Behind him it was a battle of the sexes with Dumfries RC's Steven Smith and VP-Glasgow's Nicola Hood battling it out. Smith held off a fast approaching Hood with 27:42 to Hood's 27:44. Paul Hart and Jim Ferguson were the next two finishers with 27:59 and 28:10 respectively. Hood was miles clear in the female race. Vicky Hart (Dumfries RC) was the next finisher in 34:59, followed by Dumfries teammate Maureen Dickson with 36:33.
