Junior Relays
Young Females
Joanna Muir was the final leg of the Giffnock North team and was set off in 2nd place. However, she isn't 2009 Scottish Under 15 XC Champion for nothing and chased down Shettleston's Shannon McLellan to give the Giffnock team victory. Her 8:49 leg was the 3rd fastest of the day by a female.
Kathryn Park got the Nithsdale AC team off to a good start, finishing 35th in 10:44 on the Under 13 leg. Under 15 Danielle Beattie then produced a blistering run on the 2nd leg with 9:16. This was the 2nd fastest time of the 2nd leg and put the team up into 12th place. It was then up to Stephanie Lawrie to finish things off and she did so with a 10:01 leg, putting the team in 13th place.
Running for Shettleston Harriers D Team, Laura Penrice produced a fine run with 9:29 on the final leg. Having missed the trials for their teams, she should be in a better team by the National XC Relays. Her team finished 23rd.
Young Males
Nithsdale AC had two teams in this competiton. The A Team consisted of Angus Johnstone, Chris Ponton and late call up Glen Watson and the B Team consisted of Zack Stewart, Fraser White and Ryan Holmes.
On the first leg, 1st Year Under 13 Angus ran well to finish 15th in 9:00, while Zack, a newcomer to athletics was a decent 40th in 9:58.
The A Team moved up to 14th on the next leg, courtesy of Chris Ponton in 8:25. The B Team also moved up to 31st, thanks to Under 13 Fraser White who ran a very good 8:56.
Due to the absence of David Vernon, there was a lack of Under 17 athletes so sprinter Glen Watson and Under 15 Ryan Holmes stepped up to the mark. Glen struggled compared to the endurance athletes but hung on to finish 18th in a decent time of 9:04. Ryan, who like Fraser is a newcomer to athletics, ran very well in 8:32 to put the team up to 24th.
Senior/Junior Women
Nicola Hood (VP-Glasgow) produced a great run of 14:09 to push her VP-Glasgow team up to 4th place from 8th. This leg proved to be the 3rd fastest female time of the day and allowed Claire Mccracken to get the team into bronze medal position.
The Scottish National XC Relays will take place in Cumbernauld on the 24th October.
